Date:

Saturday, 3 June 2017 - 12:00am to Sunday, 23 July 2017 - 12:00am

Member of Creative Stitchers - Whakatāne Embroiderers’ GuildA wide variety of embroidery, including beading, mixed media and gold work is all part of Decorative Threads, a new exhibition by members of Creative Stitchers - Whakatāne Embroiderers’ Guild, showcasing the immense talent and creativity of this local group.

Embroidery has been practiced over many decades, from the embellished, elaborate and intricate of traditional methods to the contemporary world of mixed media and various dyeing techniques applied today. In this exhibition, exquisite hand-stitched imagery and decorative samplers sit alongside more functional objects, such as table runners and mats, which have been transformed into imaginative artworks.

The exhibition includes more than 80 works, including a select ‘Challenge’ collection, whereby members of the Guild created works in response to a range of themes. Leading contemporary embroidery artist and guest exhibitor Jo Dixey will judge these awards and exhibit her own artworks alongside in the Whakatāne Community Board Gallery.

The Whakatāne Guild was formed in 1981 as part of the Association of NZ Embroiderers’ Guilds Inc., which has 59 groups throughout the country.

Members meet weekly to learn many different embroidery techniques, and the wider guild affiliation offers members a chance to stretch themselves creatively with an Extensions Group and a Traditional Group.
