'Ngā Mata o te Ariki Tāwhirimātea' and 'Came From Te Kore' Exhibition Openings

Join us for a very special opening event to celebrate two new exhibitions for Matariki 2021!

From 6pm on Saturday 10 July, Whakatane Art Gallery will be hosting a gala event full of live music and special guests as we unveil the renewed Sheaff and Whakatane Community Board Galleries to the public.

'Ngā Mata o te Ariki Tāwhirimātea' is a collaborative suite of works from celebrated Māori artists Maisey Rika and Erena Koopu, with music and visual art combining for a beautiful exploration of the stars.

‘Came From Te Kore' features evocative new work from Tessa Williams, award winning artist from Pōneke.

Doors open at 6pm
Music, refreshments and exceptionally good vibes from 6:30pm
Galleries close at 8pm

The Whakatāne Museum is located in the Eastern Bay of Plenty and serves the Whakatāne District and the Mataatua rohē. The museum operates over two premises.

Museum Background

The origins of the museum date to 1933, with the formation of the Bay of Plenty Māori and Historical Research Society.
