Tangiweto is the first solo exhibition from local contemporary artist Tina Tangiweto in which she reveals her insecurities and coping mechanisms in a fearful, colonised landscape full of confusing capitalist ceremonies and expectations.
Urgently contemporary in form while paying homage to tīpuna in content, the artist’s work shows intense vulnerability with visceral depictions of food, family and her emotional status.
Tangiweto boldly confronts issues such as the inherited behaviours of emotional eating and smoking through the transformative power of maramataka and art. She allows us uncensored access to her journey as she navigates through depression, bicultural baggage and decolonization to relearn customary Māori ways of being, seeing, doing, and mourning.
Tina Tangiweto’s current art practice includes large scale murals that celebrate unique pre-European histories, and commissioned portraits.
