A Harmony of Complexities - Frank and Molly Morpeth Canaday in Retrospect

Date:

Saturday, 24 September 2016 - 12:00am to Sunday, 20 November 2016 - 12:00am

In this revealing exhibition, discover the paintings of Wellington-born artist Molly Morpeth Canaday (1903-1971), whose name has become synonymous with art awards in Whakatāne.

At the age of 29, Molly moved to America for love and to marry Frank Canaday. In America Molly furthered her art practise, studying with émigré artist Israel Abramofsky and Austrian artist Joseph Floch (1895-1977). This exhibition tracks her development from her early period, where pattern and colour are explored through the pleasures of the everyday, to her later abstraction paintings influenced by heady 1950s New York and the development of Abstract Expressionism.
