The 80s Show, with paintings from the Fletcher Trust Collection, has been curated by Tauranga Art Gallery to give those born after 1990 an opportunity to contextualise the period, while reacquainting earlier generations with a time that has become synonymous with pop culture classics and tumultuous events.
During this time New Zealand made international headlines for its anti-nuclear stance and protests against apartheid. The art world experienced a peak in that time not seen in the decades before. This exhibition features paintings by significant New Zealand Artists such as Dick Frizzell, Philippa Blair, Gordon Walters, and Max Gimblett.
We have an exciting line up of public programmes to compliment The 80’s Show such as a Patea Māori Club inspired poi making workshop in the school holidays and Tāme Iti speaking about his experiences during the Spring Bok Tour at an event in the gallery on October 4th.
