Established in 1960, the Whakatāne Society of Arts and Crafts inc. began as a way for friends to learn about painting together. In its time, the Society has taken up residence in sitting rooms, a building behind the Commercial Hotel, Whakatāne High School art rooms (night classes Adult Education Scheme) and the building on McAlister Street now fondly known as The Art House.
Nearly 60 years on, the Society continues to be a place of friendship and learning, with over 100 members, and 13 active groups.
This is their 8th exhibition at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi. This exhibition celebrates the Whakatāne Society of Arts and Crafts and their role in designating a space for creative comradery in our town.
