Not to represent, but memorialise is a three channel video work that explores ways of engaging with tensions inherent in museums, archives and gardens. Thinking through the idea of the encounter in a museum context it addresses ways of engaging with taonga Māori in European collections, but also thinks through the broader British colonial project and the movement of plants and animals.
About Hana Pera Aoake:
Hana Pera Aoake (Ngaati Mahuta, Ngaati Hinerangi, Waikato/Tainui) is an artist, writer, and occasional teacher based in Kawerau. In 2020 they published a book of selected writing called A bathful of Kawakawa and hot water (Compound Press). Hana primarily co-organises Kei te pai press with Morgan Godfery. Currently they are undertaking a curatorial residency at the Delphina foundation with Metroland studios in London. Hana is also a part of a Digital Fellowship programme with Creative Australia and Creative New Zealand. In 2021-22 Hana was a participating artist in Regional Arts Australia’s inaugural Regional Assembly.
